Gurdeep Loyal is a Food and Travel Writer & Future Food Trends consultant based in East London. He began his culinary career in the Marketing team at innocent drinks – then a pioneering startup company that was shaking up how brands spoke to consumers. After 8 years at innocent, Gurdeep travelled the globe for a year in pursuit of new gastronomic experiences and to explore world cuisines, before returning to London to take up a job as Head of Marketing for Food halls, Restaurants, Wines and Spirits at Harrods in Knightsbridge. Gurdeep was one of the key instigators of the ‘Harrods Taste Revolution’ which saw the world famous food halls transformed for the first time in 30 years – and worked on food partnerships with brands like Gucci, Burberry and Dior.

After this, Gurdeep took up the role as Head of Future Food Trends in the product development team at Marks & Spencer. His job was to travel the world to discover exciting new foods, cuisines and trends that would delight the dinner tables of the nation.

Today he a food and travel writer, whose work spotlights diasporic food cultures of the world, traces the evolution of migratory cuisines and seeks to decolonise food narratives, as well as bringing exciting food trends from around the globe to British home cooks.

He curates the online platform MotherTongueTV.com which celebrates food stories of migration, race and identity; and has written about the culture aspects of food for the likes of Suitcase Magazine, The Independent Newspaper, Delicious Magazine, Borough Market and Olive Magazine, in which he has a monthly column.

Gurdeep was winner of the Jane Grigson Trust Award for his first cookbook ‘Mother Tongue – Flavours of a Second Generation’ (released March ’23 UK, Jan ’24 USA), which explores British-Indian identity through food, memoir and recipes. The book was named the Observer Food Monthly’s ‘favourite new cookbook’, was lauded in Harpers Bazaar, Stylist and Delicious Magazine, and praised by the likes of Nigella Lawson, Diana Henry, Claudia Roden and Anna Jones. He is a regular guest on British food TV including the BBC 1 show ‘Saturday Kitchen’, has featured on Nadiya Hussain’s BBC Show, on BBC Radio 4, and a host of podcasts - including the Olive Magazine podcast, on which he is a regular guest and occasional co-host.
